Research Reference & Training Centre

Research Reference & Training Centre (RRTC), New Delhi is a part of the Union Ministry Information & Broadcasting. Since 1945, it has been functioning as an information servicing agency for the I&B Ministry, its media units and their field offices.

The centre is of great help for the media units as it provides meaningful information to them. Trends in Mass Communication studies are also monitored by the centre. The Division provides background,, reference and research materials and other facilities for the use of the Ministry, its media units and others engaged in mass communication. The Division also looks after the training aspect of the Indian Information service (IIS) officers in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC).

Mission

To provide high quality research and reference services to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and its Media Units for planning media policies, strategies and campaigns for effective mass communication and to develop human resources of these media units to be at par with the best in the world. The centre also produces packaged information for the media persons and media researchers and Scholars.

Our Objectives

To collect and collate basic information on matters of national significance
To provide reference services to the media units of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting
To provide research support in matters of interest to the Ministry of I&B and its Media Units
To convert the information available with other media units into reference material for use by press/officers
To provide, on demand, packaged information to accredited Indian and foreign media persons, researchers, academic institutes and other such bodies
To prepare and publish newsletters, research papers and journals, reference papers and reference annual like “India-A Reference Annual”, “Mass Media in India”
To design and conduct in-service training programmes for IIS (Indian Information Service) officers and other professionals
To oversee the training of IIS Probationers being conducted at IIMC
To conduct seminars, workshops and panel discussions for skill upgradation in various Media Units
To create communication channels to synergies the efforts of various Media Units to assist them in effective communication of plans, policies and programmes of the Govt of India

India – A reference annual, prepared by the centre, provides the most authentic document on India. It contains a factual overview of Government Policies and programmes
Mass Media in India: It contains information on mass communication, touching upon all the issues related to mass media in India. The information is compiled at the national, state and institutional level
Events 2000: This Programme Calendar gives a comprehensive picture of various events scheduled for the year

National Documentation Centre Services

Current Awareness Services: This all-in-one monthly contains an annotated list of contemporary mass media news from radio, television and film to press, journalism and advertising.
Bibliography Service: This quarterly service furnishes an annotated list of articles appearing in journals, newspapers, books, reports, etc., thereby reflecting trends and views in the media.
Bulletin on Films: This monthly mass media service not only provides a monthly scoop of film related information but also trains the eye on the role of films and the film movement in general.
Who’s Who in Mass Media: This monthly publication is a paper-profile of a single celebrity in the field of mass media.
Honours Conferred on Mass communicators: Released every six-month, this paper lists the men and women of note in media and the honours conferred on them in the current year.
Reference Information Service: Here is a service window that caters to information-seekers on a platter. The film buff has a rich fare to pick from-International Film Festivals, Film Certification, National Film Awards, what-have-you. A six monthly service.
